The constructions sector in Bahrain currently contributes 5% to the local GDP, and is expected to increase 3-5% annually. The growth is mainly attributed to the prioritization of infrastructure and housing projects in the kingdom. The government has made it a priority to deal with the high demand for social housing. There are currently 53,000 social housing applications with 4,000 new applications annually. The government has earmarked $3.2 billion to construct 30,000 homes by the year 2016.  Several other major construction projects which are currently in the works. Most notably:
